Epithalamin vs Epitalon: What Is the Difference?
Epithalamin and Epitalon Are Not the Same Peptide
Epithalamin and Epitalon are closely connected in the history of peptide research, but they are not the same substance.
The distinction is fundamental: Epithalamin is a naturally derived peptide complex associated with the pineal gland, whereas Epitalon is a separate synthetic tetrapeptide consisting of four amino acids: alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and glycine (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, or AEDG).
Scientific publications distinguish the two accordingly. Epithalamin has been described as a complex of peptides isolated from the pineal gland, while Epitalon is described as a synthetic tetrapeptide. [1–4]
This distinction is particularly important when discussing Nanopep products because Nanopep EPITIDE® and Nanopep EPITALON® Spray contain different peptide ingredients.
What Is Epithalamin?
Epithalamin is a naturally derived peptide complex originating from pineal gland tissue.
In scientific literature, Epithalamin has been described as a polypeptide or peptide preparation obtained from the pineal gland of cattle and as a complex of peptides isolated from the pineal gland. [1,2]
This means that Epithalamin is not a single four-amino-acid synthetic peptide with a defined AEDG sequence. It is a naturally derived complex containing multiple peptide components originating from pineal gland tissue.
The Epithalamin ingredient used in Nanopep EPITIDE® is naturally derived rather than produced through chemical peptide synthesis.
What Is Epitalon?
Epitalon, also spelled Epithalon in some scientific publications, is a specific tetrapeptide with the amino-acid sequence:
Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly
It is commonly abbreviated as AEDG.
Unlike natural Epithalamin, Epitalon is a synthetic peptide. Scientific publications by Khavinson and colleagues explicitly describe Epitalon as a “synthetic tetrapeptide,” and studies identify its defined sequence as Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. [3–5]
Nanopep EPITALON® Spray contains this four-amino-acid peptide complex. The current Nanopep product information also identifies EPITALON® as a synthetic peptide composed of alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and glycine.
How Are Epithalamin and Epitalon Related?
The names are similar because the development of Epitalon is historically connected to research on pineal peptide preparations.
Researchers studied peptide complexes originating from the pineal gland and subsequently developed short synthetic peptides with defined amino-acid sequences. Epitalon (AEDG) was developed on the basis of research and analysis of pineal peptide extracts. Scientific literature describes Epitalon as a tetrapeptide constructed on the basis of a pineal peptide extract. [5]
However, this relationship does not make Epitalon and Epithalamin interchangeable.
Epitalon should not be described as natural Epithalamin, and Epithalamin should not be described as synthetic Epitalon.
It is also more accurate to say that Epitalon was developed or synthesized based on the study of pineal peptide extracts than to say that Epithalamin itself is chemically converted into Epitalon.

Scientific research itself distinguishes Epithalamin as a peptide complex isolated from the pineal gland and Epitalon as a synthetic tetrapeptide.
Does Nanopep EPITIDE Contain Synthetic Epitalon?
No.
Nanopep EPITIDE® contains Epithalamin, not synthetic Epitalon (AEDG).
EPITIDE® currently provides 30 mg of Epithalamin per tablet together with nervonic acid, zinc and selenium. The product page should therefore consistently identify its active peptide component as Epithalamin and should not describe EPITIDE as containing synthetic Epitalon.
The Epithalamin used in EPITIDE® is a naturally derived peptide complex. It is not the chemically synthesized four-amino-acid Epitalon (AEDG) peptide.
Is Nanopep EPITIDE Animal-Derived?
Yes. The Epithalamin peptide complex used in EPITIDE® is naturally derived from animal pineal gland tissue rather than manufactured as a synthetic AEDG peptide.
This animal-derived origin is an important distinction between EPITIDE® and Nanopep EPITALON® Spray.
EPITALON® contains a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide, while EPITIDE® contains naturally derived Epithalamin.
Does Nanopep EPITALON Spray Contain Epithalamin?
No.
Nanopep EPITALON® Spray and EPITIDE® are separate formulations.
EPITALON® Spray contains the synthetic four-amino-acid peptide Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly (AEDG). EPITIDE® contains naturally derived Epithalamin.
Nanopep’s current EPITALON® product page describes its peptide as synthetic and identifies its four constituent amino acids.

The confusion often arises because Epitalon, whose name is similar, is synthetic. They are two different peptide preparations and the terms should not be used interchangeably.

Why the Difference Matters
Clear terminology is important when evaluating peptide products.
The words Epithalamin and Epitalon sound similar and have a shared research history, but they identify fundamentally different preparations.
When discussing Nanopep products:
EPITIDE® = naturally derived Epithalamin peptide complex.
EPITALON® Spray = synthetic Epitalon (AEDG) tetrapeptide.
Keeping these definitions separate makes it possible to accurately identify the origin, composition and manufacturing approach of each peptide ingredient.
